Bennie Lee Thomas, Jr.

MR. BENNIE LEE THOMAS, JR. 62 of WASHINGTON, DC passed away Friday, September 29, 2017 at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.  He is the son of Bennie Lee, Sr. and Catherine Thomas formerly of Mount Gilead, NC / Asheboro, NC.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00am Friday, October 6, 2017 at the Mount Zion AME Zion Church, 6748 NC Hwy. 73 West, Mount Gilead, NC 27306, with Visitation to be held 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the church prior to the service.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

A public viewing will be held 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Harris Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Mount Gilead, NC.

Bennie Lee Thomas, Jr., was born on Sunday, January 2, 1955, in Stanly County, NC, to Bennie Lee Thomas, Sr., and Catherine Green Thomas.

At an early age, he accepted Christ and became a member of Mt. Zion AME Zion Church, Mt. Gilead, NC and attended Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church, Asheboro, NC.  His favorite song was " if you gain the whole world and lose your soul. ".

Little Bennie, as he was fondly called. was educated in the public schools of Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from South Stanly High School in Norwood, NC.  He attended Livingstone College, Salisbury, NC, where he attended for three years and was on the  Dean's  List and a a member of the Livingstone  College Band.   He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity .  He was a former employee of Montgomery Ward.

Those left to cherish loving memories are his parents, Bennie Sr. and  Catherine O. Thomas of Bowie Maryland; one brother, Christopher Thomas, of Bowie, Maryland; two sisters, Pennellophia Jenkins  of Suitland, Maryland and Crystal Sutherlin of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; one uncle; Jackie Kilgore, Forestville, Maryland, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
