Doris (Dockery) Jackson

August 9, 1924 — March 19, 2018

MRS. DORIS DOCKERY JACKSON , 93 of ROCKINGHAM, NC, passed away on Monday. March 19, 2018, at her home.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday March 24, 2018, at the Oliver Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 232 Davis Haywood Road, Mount Gilead, N.C.  Interment will  follow in the Church Cemetery.

A public viewing will be held 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday, March 23, 2018 at Harris Funeral Home & Cremations of Mount Gilead, NC, is serving the Jackson Family.

Mother Doris Dockery Jackson was born on Saturday August 9, 1924 to the late Deacon Charlie and Mother Nannie Medley Dockery in Montgomery County, NC.

She was married to the late James Adam Jackson and to this union seven children were born.  He preceded her in death in 2003.

She received Christ at an early age at Oliver Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained active until her demise. At Oliver Grove, she was a Missionary, President of the Usher Board, Sunday School Teacher for the Young Adults, Adult Class, President of the Cemetery Committee and she started the birthday club. She also served in any capacity needed.

She traveled with the True Light Gospel Singers.  Ma Doris was a true Missionary who dedicated her life to serving God. She cleaned homes, cooked meals, ran errands just to name a few.  You could not visit her home without getting a hearty meal.  She even cooked for her birds and talked to them. She loved taking care of her family, friends and flowers.

She began her education in the Montgomery County Schools. Later she completed her education after her marriage, children and grandchildren at Richmond Technical College, Hamlet, NC. Ma Doris attended nutrition school at A&T University, Greensboro, NC.  She worked in the Richmond County School System for 25 years, beginning in 1962 at Mineral Springs School washing pots and pans. With her hard work, she became the first African American Manager at Richmond Senior High School Cafeteria.

At the age of 88, Ma Doris wrote her autobiography, " The Biography of a Black Christian Family " , that was published in 2014. She was predeceased by her parents, Charlie and Nannie;  husband, James,; two sons, James  MacArthur and Henry Louis Jackson; siblings, Emma Little, Hester Jackson, George T. Dockery, Charlie Jr. Dockery, Della Armstrong, Nannie Harris and four in infancy. She will be sorely missed.

She leaves a legacy of love to five children, Reverend John A. Jackson (late June) of Rockingham, NC, Clarence Jackson (Cornette) of Ellerbe, NC, Patricia Covington (late Vertis) of Rockingham, NC, Della Blue (Pastor Forrest) of Charlotte, NC, and Lester Jackson (Niclanda) of York, SC; siblings, Reverend Pearlie Chappell of Ellerbe, NC, Reverend David Dockery(Geraldine) of High Point, NC, Yvonne Harris (Raymond) of Rockingham, NC, Deacon Herbert C. Dockery (Daisy) of Norwalk, CT.,  and Reverend Robert (Lee) Dockery of Ellerbe, NC ; 32 grands, 76 great-grandchildren, 31 great-great-grandchildren, God sons, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
