MR. JOHN GORDON ROGERS, 82 of CULPEPPER, VA formerly of Marshville, NC passed away Friday, September 25, 2015 at Sanctuary at Holy Cross Nursing Home in Burtonsville, MD. Funeral Services will be held 2pm Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 5003 Gulledge School Rd., Marshville, NC with Visitation 1pm to 1:55pm at the church, prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery A public vieiwng will be held 2pm to 7pm Friday, October 7, 2015 at Harris Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Monroe, NC.
Born in Marshville, NC Tuesday, August 22, 1933 a son of the late Gordon "Buddy" Rogers and Essie Mae Covington. He was preceded in death by his siblings; "Baby Marvin", "Baby James", Claudette, Virginia, Curtis, Pandora, Roy Lee, Preston Collins, Lilly Mae Bennett, Odessa Knotts, Mary Jane Covington Phillips, Gregory Covington and Betty Jo Cherry. John attented Gulledge School and later married the late Mary Ruth Allen Rogers and to this union they brought forth two beautiful children, Johnny Ray Rogers of Wadesboro, NC and the late Catherine Rogers. In the early 1970's John left his hometown and moved to Washington, DC where he followed the love of his life the late Laura Ester Collins. He worked as a Brick Mason for over 20 years and was a Businessman where he owned a Candy Store where people in the community respected him and purchased candy, chips and sodas. John loved to Farm, Fish, Hunt and most of all he loved to read and his past time playing Solitare. During the winter months he would spend time reading the Almanac to prepare for his agriculture talents during the Spring, planting seeds in his garden, so when the harvest was ready, everyone could eat from it for free.
Through the union of the late Laura Ester Collins they gave life to Truth S.J. Mchansen AKA Shirley Jean Rogers ( Jesse) of Culpepper, VA, Ricky Dale Collins and Timothy Lane Collins (Lynette) both of Wingate, NC and Erica M.Rogers-Thaggard (Ronald) of Silver Springs, MD and raised Elvis Collins and Tony Collins both Monroe, NC and Sabrina Bradley (Reggie) of Kannapolis, NC. He also took his daughter Catherine's children as his own and became the Father and Grandfather to Eurika and Desiree Rogers. 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He also leave to cherish fond and loving memories to his siblings; Savanah Howard and Earnest Covington of Wingate, NC and Maxine Covington Medley and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
