Johnny Calloway, Jr. 78 of Mount Gilead, NC died Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Autumn Care of Biscoe, NC. Funeral Services will be held 1:pm Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Oliver Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 232 Davis - Haywood Rd., Mount Gilead, NC 27306, with his son, Reverend Jesse Calloway, eulogist. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be held 12:pm to 7pm Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Harris Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Mount Gilead, NC.
" June or Pop" as he was fondly called by family and friends, was born on January 17, 1935, in Richmond County, NC, to the late John Calloway, Sr., and Nealie Haywood Calloway. He was a lifetime member of Oliver Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he was an ordained Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Choir President and acting Sunday School Director until his health declined.
June loved to fish, hunt, farm and most of all, his gospel music, with favorite song being "Somebody Touched Me"! He was formerly employed by Capel Rug Mill in Troy, NC
He was united in holy matrimony to Miss. Irene Baldwin on October 18, 1959, and to this union 12 children were born. Four preceded him in death, twin infants, daughters, Janice C. Hill and Mary C. Martin, along with his parents and siblings, Dorothy Calloway, Elizabeth " Belle" Robinson, Blanche Crump(late Willie B.), Ethel Martin, James W. "Man" Calloway( late Ruth) and granddaughter, Katrina C. Calloway.
Those left to cherish loving and fond memories to his lovely and devoted wife of 53 years, Irene B. Calloway of the home; children; Robert Calloway (Ruthie) of Asheboro, NC, Dorena Dawkins (Winford) of Hamlet, NC; Tinna Patterson (Tim), Clementine Bradley (Bobby), Andrea Calloway, Windell Calloway (Angela), all of Mt. Gilead, NC, Lee Calloway (Kim) and Reverend Jesse Calloway (Sherry), all of Troy, NC; 4 sisters, Betty Jean Ledbetter (late J.D.), Irene Tyson (late Charles) and Lou Jean Pearson (John), all of High Point, NC and Florence Calloway of Long Island, NY; a god sister(niece), Dorothy Ann Davis of Albemarle, NC, 30 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and dear friends.
