MR. LEWIS EDWARD VINSON, SR., 69 of MOUNT GILEAD, NC, formerly of MONROE, NC , passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Carolinas Healthcare System - Stanly in Albemarle, NC.
Funeral Services will be held 1:00 pm Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Saint Luke Church of God, 542 Parkertown Rd., Mount Gilead, NC 27306. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
A public viewing will be held 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Mount Gilead, NC.
Lewis was born Saturday, November 1, 1947, to the late Hallie Mae Vinson Doster in Union County, Monroe, NC.
He attended the public schools of Union County and Winthrop University in SC. He was very active in sports, basketball, semi pro baseball, golf and coached baseball for several years. He was employed by Spring Mills and Bloomsburg Mills in Monroe where he retired.
Lewis was an active member of St. Luke Church of God, where he was a member of the Usher Board, Sunday School Superintendent and Head Trustee.
He was united in holy matrimony to Janie Miller Vinson for 35 years. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kim Doster, a nephew, Derrick Doster and recently, his mother-in-law, Mrs. Eugenia Miller.
He leaves cherished memories to his devoted wife, Janie Miller Vinson; sons, Lewis Vinson, Jr., of the home and Edward Burns of Charlotte, NC; daughters, Chaka Gibbs ( Dennis) of Durham, NC and Keya Vinson ( Darius) of Albemarle, NC; 5 grandchildren, Jaiden, Ke'Aja, Jai'Kel, Amiyah and Nakiyah and special grandson, Karter Pegues; eight siblings; Ruta Walker (Steven) of Laurel Hill, MD, Bettye Jones (Zack) of Lancaster SC; James, Donald Ray, Michael Heath and Ronnie Doster of Monroe, NC, Lawrence and Darryl Doster of Charlotte, NC; one uncle, George Vinson of Monroe, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lewis will be missed rooting for his favorite teams, NC Tarheels, Golden State Warriors and the Carolina Panthers; his love for manicuring lawns and talking to the members of the Community.
