Mr. Marcus Ernest Lewis, Sr., 101 of Mount Gilead, NC, died Thursday, February 7, 2013 in Boulevard Temple Nursing and Rehabilitation Home, in Detroit, MI. Funeral Services will be held 11am Saturday, February 16, 2013 at St. Luke Church of God, 542 Parkertown Rd., Mount Gilead, NC 27306, where Elder Eric Smalley is Pastor, and Bishop Arlester Simpson, will be the Eulogist. Burial to follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 10am to 10:55am prior to the service at the church. Public viewing will be held 12noon to 7pm Friday, February 15, 2013 at Harris Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Mount Gilead, NC.
Marcus was a native of Montgomery County, where he was a Teacher and Assistant Principal at Troy Elementary School in Troy, North Carolina. He also was a Deacon at St. Luke First United Church of God in Mt. Gilead, North Carolina. He was a member of the NAACP, a graduate of Tuskegee Institute, Winston-Salem Teachers College, Fayetteville State Teachers College and A & T State University. He was married to the late Flora Crawford Lewis. He was the son of the late Samuel and Rometta Tyson Lewis.
Marcus leaves to cherish his memories, his children; Mrs. Juanita L. Raleigh (Jerry) of Greensboro, NC, Dr. Marcus E. Lewis, Jr., (Janice) of Southfield, MI, Ms. Bertina Bennett of Greensboro, NC and adopted daughter, Mrs. Georgianne White of New York; two grandchildren; Jerry Raleigh, Jr., of Raleigh, NC and Bryan Lewis of Southfield, MI; two great-grandchildren; Christopher Jones and Brittany Jones, both of Greensboro, NC; one brother, William Lewis (Angel) of Charlotte; two sisters, Mrs. Rosa L. Bell of Monroe, NC and Mrs. Queen Weaver ( Dr. Frank) of Raleigh, NC, two sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loved ones.
