Mrs. Novella LeGrand Turner, 76, of Mount Gilead, NC died Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC. Funeral Services will be held 11am Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Chestnut AME Zion Church, 7093 Grassy Island Rd., Mount Gilead, NC 27306. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be held 1pm to 7pm Friday, August 2, 2013 at Harris Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Mount Gilead, NC.
Novella L. Turner was the eldest of 12 children born to the late Walter Stevenson and Anner Robinson LeGrand on April 7, 1937, in Montgomery County, NC.
She was converted at an early age and joined Chestnut A.M.E. Zion Church, Mt. Gilead, NC and remained a loyal and faithful member throughout her life. Novella truly loved her church.
Her education began at the St. Stephen A.M.E. Church, Mt. Gilead, NC and the J. S. Edward School on Highway 73, Mt. Gilead NC. She graduated from Peabody High School, Troy, NC in 1955 and also graduated from Livingstone College, Salisbury, NC in 1959, with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Education and a Masters of Arts Degree from NC A&T State University, Greensboro, NC.
Novella taught 36 years in the Montgomery County Public School System. She taught 3rd, 5th, Chapter One Reading and Adult Basic Education. Novella was united in marriage to the late A.D. Turner and preceded in death by brothers; James Patrick, Walter S. LeGrand, Jr., sisters, Estella LeGrand and Blenda J. Steele.
She leaves to cherish loving and fond memories to three sons; Jeremy M. Turner of Greensboro, NC, Jonathan M. Turner of the home and Glen D. Turner of Raleigh, NC; two daughters, Patricia J. Turner of Asheboro, NC and Elaine Furlow of Raleigh, NC; one granddaughter, Bailee-Marie Williams; brothers, John W. LeGrand(Sheila) and Harley D. LeGrand (Audrey), all of Charlotte, NC and Thomas J. LeGrand of Mt. Gilead, NC; sisters; Josephine Leak and Nita Harris (Rev. Howard), all of Mt. Gilead, NC, Annie L. Timmons (Leroy) and Mary J. Bradshaw (Allison), all of Charlotte, NC; one aunt, Mary Ellen Tyson of Trenton, NJ; two sisters-in-law, Rosa LeGrand of Ansonville, NC and Emma Miller of Mt. Gilead, NC; two brothers-in-law, Peter Steele of Mt. Gilead, NC and Arthur Turner of Cleveland, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
