Philip Edmond (P.E.) Bazemore

MR. PHILIP EDMOND (P.E.) BAZEMORE, 94 of MONROE, NC passed away Monday, May 25, 2015 at CHS - Union in Monroe, NC.  Mr. Bazemore was the first African American to be elected to Monroe City Council and also served as Mayor of the City of Monroe.

Born Monday, April 11, 1921 in Bertie County, NC a son of the late  Henry Norman Bazemore and Arie Victoria Williams Bazemore.

A Celebration of his Life and Legacy will be held 2pm Sunday, May 31, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, 302 East Windsor St., Monroe, NC 28112, Reverend Larry W. Leake, Eulogist, Entombment to follow in the Lakeland Memorial Park Mausoleum with Masonic Rites , 1901 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, 28112.  Visitations will be held 5:30pm to 7pm Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 501 P.E. Bazemore Dr., Monroe,NC 28110 and 1pm to 2pm Sunday  prior to the Service at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe, NC

Phil was a graduate of Hampton University in Virginia and worked for 30 years as an agriculture agent in Edgecombe and Union County, a faithful member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Monroe, NC where he served as Chairman of Trustees for many years.  After retiring from agriculture extension he launched his first campaign for City Council in Monroe in 1981 where he served for 28 years and also served a short term as Mayor of the City of Monroe. He was an active member of the 8th District Leadership Black Caucus, The Union County Democratic Party, Union County Community Action and Hope Lodge # 32 (PHA) of Monroe, NC also recieving many community leadership awards including Order of the Long Leaf Pine.  Phil was preceded in death by his wife Camilla Egerton Bazemore in 1987.

He leaves to cherish fond and loving memories to his daughter; Ina Bazemore Horn and son-in-law Terrence Horn and granddaughters Camilla and Nena Horn all of Waxhaw, NC; two sisters; Dorothy Watson of Philadelphia, Pa and Bertha Angel of Windsor, NC; one brother; Timothy Bazemore of Windsor, NC; sister-in-law Beautrice Egerton and one brother-in-law; Bert Egerton both of Louisburg, NC  and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund, 501 P.E. Bazemore Dr., Monroe, NC 28110.  Harris Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Monroe, NC is in charge.
