Sgt. 1st Class WALTER EDWARD "Pete" SMITH, US ARMY RET., 69 of MONROE, NC, formerly of Anson County, NC, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Atrium Hospice of Cabarrus County in Kannapolis, NC.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 pm Friday, June 1, 2018 at the Rose of Sharon Friendship Church of God, 186 Martin St., Ansonville, NC 28007. Full Military Honors and Interment will be held in the Church Cemetery.

A public viewing will be held 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, May 31, 2018 Harris Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Monroe, NC.

"Pete" was born to the late Thomas and Eliza Smith of Ansonville, NC.

He confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized by  the late , Bishop A. V. Lindsey, at. of Rose of Sharon Friendship Church of God. He taught Sunday School at an early age.  He attended the public schools of Anson County and graduated from West Ansonville High School, Class of 1966. After graduating from high school, he attended South Piedmont Community College taking four in electronics.  Walter served 23 years in the United States Army.  He retired after working several years at Tyco, formerly Scott Safety, where he was assistant supervisor.

He was loved and will be sorely missed by family and friends and every one he met through his walk of life.  Until his health failed, his hobbies and interests included; watching western movies, cooking, baking cakes, watching Duke University basketball games, detailing his car and spending time with his grandchildren.  A man with a big heart and a wonderful Place, he always wanted to make you smile..  He loved his grandchildren and great granddaughter, who they called Papa.  He was predeceased by his parents, one sister Josephine Richardson and a brother John Thomas Parker.

Those left to cherish and to honor his memory are his wife; Hattie Mae Gaddy Smith; his devoted children, Pamela Oviedo (Jose) of Monroe, NC, Stacey Smith (Georgette) of Fort Worth, TX and Veronica Davis of Lexington, NC, Sister; Joyce Little (Eddie) of Wadesboro, NC, brothers; George Smith of Winston-Salem, NC and Charles Smith of High Point, NC, five grandchildren; Maya Evans of Concord, NC, Warren Evans of Monroe, NC and great-granddaughter, Mila Mendoza of Concord, NC, Nikki Cockrane of Lexington, NC, Desmond Brown (Dominique) of Kannapolis, NC and a great-granddaughter, Naomi Brown of Lexington, NC 4 brothers and sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
