MRS. VELMA RUTH CURETON HOLIDAY, 82, of NEW YORK, NY, formerly of MONROE, NC, passed away Friday, August 19 at Harlem Hospital in New York, NY.
A memorial service in her honor will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, September 3, 2016, at the Harris Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Monroe, NC. Visitation will be held 12:00pm to 1:00pm, in the chapel prior to the service.
Harris Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Monroe, NC, is in charge of arrangements.
Velma was born on Friday, December 29, 1993, to the late Ms. Nettie Cureton and Mr. Haywood Barber, in Union County, NC.
She received her early education in the Union County Public Schools and attended Winchester Avenue High School. She briefly lived in Washington, DC and later migrated to New York, where she began her career as a domestic worker.
She was raised in a Christian home and accepted Christ at an early age joining Union Springs African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Monroe, NC. Velma loved the Lord as was committed to a life of faith. She had a personal relationship with Christ and wanted to do His will by serving others.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Nellie Cureton; daughter Le'Carol (baby); brother, John F. Cureton, Sr., and husband, Roy L. Holiday.
She leaves to cherish fond memories to; one sister, Brenda Redfern of Monroe, NC; one brother-in-law, Nathaniel Redfern of Monroe, NC; four nephews, Robert Anderson and John F. Cureton, Jr., both of Monroe, NC, Christopher (Belinda) Redfern and Reginald Redfern, all of Charlotte, NC; three nieces, Betty Griffin of Oakboro, NC, JoNetta Cureton and Makeba Redfern, both of Monroe, NC; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
