MRS. ZELMA LEE THOMAS SCARBOROUGH, 93 of MOUNT GILEAD, NC passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at First Health / Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, NC. Mrs. Scarborough was the widow of the late Reverend John R. Scarborough. Funeral Services will be held 11:00am Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Leah Richter Levin Memorial Auditorium, 102 S. School St., Mount Gilead, NC 27306. Visitation for family and friends will be held 10:30am to 10:55am at the Auditorium prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Mount Zion A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery in Mount Gilead, NC. A Public viewing will be held 12pm to 7pm Friday, January 8, 2016 at Harris Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Mount Gilead, NC.

Mother Zelma was born on Sunday, September 17, 1922, in Chatham County, NC, to the late Winfield Sr., and Ethel Williams Thomas. She was united in marriage to Reverend J. R. Scarborough for 67 years, prior to his passing on December 18, 2012.

Mother Zelma, attended the public schools of Chatham County and later attended nursing school in Charlotte, NC for one year. She was a school bus driver for many years, a member of the Oak Ridge Chapter #547 of Mount Gilead, a First Lady for 48 years and a member of Mount Zion A.M.E. Zion Church, where she worked diligently in any capacity. She loved her family,especially her grandchildren and was concerned for many. She was an excellent cook and will be sorely missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, children, Joanne Scarborough, Harriet Scarborough, LTC Earldine Cisco; brothers, Broadus Thomas (Mamie), Winfield Thomas Jr., (Bernice) and Stevie Thomas (Sudja).

Mother Zelma leaves a legacy of love to her devoted children, Bobby Ray Scarborough (Essie) of Suffolk, VA., Geraldine Adkins (Charles) of Charles City, VA., and Johnny Scarborough (Varena) of Albemarle, NC; 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; 4 grandchildren reared in the home, Marquez Scarborough, LeeWayne Scarborough (Yolanda), Deltric Ransome (Daniel), Gregory Quick (Ashley); one brother, Bennie Lee Thomas(Catherine) of Maryland; a son-in-law, Richard Cisco of Augusta, GA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
